Teaching Philosophy

 

I believe effective creative education begins with strong foundations and develops through continuous practice, constructive critique and purposeful experimentation. My approach is foundations-first, feedback-driven and industry-focused. I help students build confidence in drawing, visual observation, anatomy, composition, storytelling and technical skills before moving into more complex creative work. Through regular critique, I encourage students to understand not only what needs improvement, but why it is not working and how they can develop a stronger solution. I also give students room to explore their own ideas and develop an individual creative voice rather than simply reproduce a prescribed style. At the same time, I connect classroom learning to professional practice by encouraging students to think about portfolios, production workflows, creative-industry expectations and the career paths they aspire to enter. My experience across visual art, animation, 3D, storytelling and digital production has also allowed me to introduce new technologies when they genuinely enhance creative thinking. Ultimately, my goal is to help students become independent creative practitioners who can analyse their own work, respond constructively to criticism, solve visual problems, communicate their ideas clearly and continue developing their practice beyond the classroom.

Student Outcomes

From C to A — and an A+ Distinction

At Nanyang Polytechnic, I coached and motivated two animation students who progressed from C grades to A grades. One of the students achieved an A+ distinction.

My focus was not simply on improving grades, but on identifying the underlying weaknesses and giving students the guidance, practice and confidence needed to overcome them.

A Grades in Kinetic Sculpture

At Ngee Ann Polytechnic, I coached three students in developing kinetic-sculpture projects that achieved A grades.

The projects combined creative exploration with physical form, movement and problem-solving—an example of how I encourage students to move beyond conventional approaches to visual art and design.

Award-Winning Animation & Storytelling

During my tenure at Raffles, my students received acclaim for their animation and storytelling skills, with their successes celebrated by both Raffles and Coventry University.

The Coventry University Course Director also highlighted the quality of the students' work and my contribution to their development through feedback, technical guidance and industry-oriented mentoring.

CURRICULUM DEVELOPMENT & ENHANCEMENT

Animal Anatomy — From Anatomy to Movement

I revamped the Animal Anatomy module at Ngee Ann Polytechnic to incorporate industry-level assignments exploring anatomy and movement mechanics through hybrid-creature design. The objective was to move anatomy beyond memorisation and connect anatomical understanding with the practical demands of character and creature development.

Remedial Drawing — Strengthening the Foundations

Students enter creative programmes with very different levels of drawing ability. At Nanyang Polytechnic, I introduced drawing remedial programmes for students who needed additional support in the Figure Drawing module. The approach focused on strengthening fundamental drawing skills so that weaker students could participate more confidently in subsequent animation and visual-development work.

AI-Assisted Creative Development

At Raffles College, I pioneered the use of AI image-generation tools for conceptualisation and brainstorming in students' major projects. My approach is to use emerging technology as a creative tool while retaining the importance of artistic foundations, visual judgement and original thinking. AI can accelerate ideation—but strong visual foundations determine whether an idea is worth pursuing.

Remote Learning & Remote Creative Practice

During my Coventry University teaching, I helped enhance students' remote-learning and remote-working capabilities over a two-year period.

I see remote learning not simply as a substitute for physical teaching, but as an opportunity to prepare artists and designers for the increasingly distributed nature of creative work. Remote creative practice can develop skills in: Online critique · Digital presentation · Remote collaboration · Independent project management

Submission Authencity System

To strengthen the authenticity and integrity of student submissions, I proactively developed a Submission Authencity System for my Coventry University undergraduate teaching at Raffles College. The system used a dual-pronged approach:

01 — Weekly Work Reviews
Students' work was reviewed progressively throughout the development process, allowing me to monitor their creative development, provide timely feedback and identify inconsistencies in the evolution of a project.

02 — Source-File Submission
Students were required to submit their original source files together with their final work. This provided additional evidence of the development and authorship of the submitted project.

Rather than treating authenticity as something checked only at the point of final assessment, the system incorporated ongoing review and process evidence into the learning and assessment cycle.

This approach also reinforced my broader teaching philosophy: creative work should be evaluated not only by its final appearance, but by the thinking, experimentation, development and problem-solving behind it.
